"... Who are you?"
"You know me, and yet you don't know me."
"... WHAT are you?"
"A hope, an anchor against despair."
"... Are you an angel?"
"Only if you believe."
"Why me? I don't... feel..."
"You are worth more than you think you do. You have done more good than any of us may ever know. You have earned your admission to our ranks. But only if you believe that you can be as great as us. You must believe, and you must keep him from the darkness."
"... I don't... I don't understand..."
"One day you will. One day you will know all, and understand these sweet whispers. Until then, you must believe, you must trust."

-----------------------------

It was easy for Wormmon to be a shrinking violet of a Digimon. Never very talkative to begin with, Ken's descent into darkness as "the Digimon Emperor" turned Wormmon even more inward, hiding his pain and despair behind a curtain of general silence and hurt expressions. When it all poured out, at that critical battle, the cost was everything; he had to reincarnate at the Primary Village to see that his sacrifice had indeed brought Ken out of the darkness.

It was almost inconceivable for him to envision himself as DigiDestined. He was told his sacrifice had proved he was one, but the more and more he heard of the deeds of the others the less and less he could be certain of that. All the other Digimon loomed as increasingly amazing heroes.

Despite her short stature, Gatomon loomed tallest of all in Wormmon's mind. The tales he heard told were astonishing. She had suffered much the same way he had suffered, and came out a level higher because of it. There was an intercessor, as he had done for Ken, that brought her out from the darkness, then died for her right in front of her and all the other DigiDestined. She was light in Digimon form, a beautiful, smiling angel compared to his shy awkwardness.

Then she began approaching. He shrunk back, feeling both overawed and unworthy. She insisted, and begin whispering those sweet whispers of encouragement and confidence. He never understood why, she said he didn't have to, just to believe what she said. He just treasured those statements, turned them over in his mind, and tried to believe.

Later, the day of darkness came. Myotismon returned, with pain, despair, death and the narrowest of victories over him. It was only on that day that he did understand, that those sweet whispers were for countering the whispers of darkness. Whispers of faith, whispers of courage, whispers of truth. Whispers moved by faith and sacrifice to fight and subdue great evil. And for that, he was grateful.

----------------------------

"So then you understand now?"
"Yes I do. What I saw... horrible."
"Yes, horrible evil. But over great love and courage it can never triumph."
"My sacrifice, then..."
"Exactly. As you did and have done, you must keep doing. It is the only way to keep back the darkness."
"... So then you ARE an angel!"
"I am glad you can see me for what I am now."

- END
So, a Digimon... drabble, I guess you could call it. I've actually done several different versions of this story, but they never "flowed" right, so I got rid of them. This is the first version I've actually found to work for me.

Like my other stories, I tread a path few others have gone down, namely the relationship between Gatomon and Wormmon. The "shrinking violet" Wormmon seems to view her as almost a superhero, while Gatomon sees Wormmon as someone she can build up to resist the darkness that brought so much suffering to him and Ken. In this way, her "sweet whispers" of encouragement and support are part of a "spiritual battle" against the crushing, poisonous darkness ultimately sourced from the still-existing Myotismon.

These "sweet whispers" would not have been understood when they were given, but only in the hindsight of the damage left in the final battle against MaloMyotismon. Such efforts couldn't have defeated evil by itself, but at least kept Wormmon from despair. In this way, they would have been extremely helpful to him.

There's not much else I can say about this, other than enjoy!
